This is a dream we’ve had for a while. A dream of combining a beautiful traditional sailing boat and a stunning location to create a unique adventure for everyone who comes aboard. Whether you’ve never been sailing before or you’re an enthusiast we hope you’ll appreciate the timber craftsmanship, the old world charm of travelling on a traditional sailing vessel and the energising feeling that only saltwater and sea air can give you.
The Alexander Stewart is a traditionally rigged ketch styled after ‘The Spray’ the ship in which Joshua Slocum achieved the first solo circumnavigation of the globe in 1898. The Alexander Stewart was hand built by three generations of the Mitchell family in the 1970’s. A family of boatbuilders: grandfather, Alexander Stewart Mitchell (who the boat is named after), his sons Clive and John Mitchell and current owner, Clive’s son, Ivan Mitchell worked on the vessel every weekend for 20 years, finally completing the project in 1989.
The Alexander Stewart has 9 private double cabins and is believed to be the largest cold-moulded timber hull in the southern hemisphere. After working in the Whitsundays for 10 years, the vessel is now based in Docklands and sailing in Port Phillip Bay with a capacity for 30 people for day trips or 18 overnight.
Melbourne Sailing adventures runs regular tours including, day sails, sunset sailing and overnight trips. If you’d like to hire the vessel for another purpose such as a private charter, school excursion, corporate event, wedding, research expedition, team building exercise, photoshoot, filming, media or any other type of adventure please get in touch with us.
